The Department of Work and Organisation Studies (WOS) is an interdisciplinary group of about 50 different theoretical as well as methodological perspectives to the study of work. More specifically, the research at WOS aims to extend knowledge on employees’ and job seekers’ psychological well-being and on organisational practices, policies and processes that affect the nature and conditions of work and the organisation of labour within the society. This includes a.o. research on: – Human Resource Management – Leadership & Organisational behaviour – Quality of labour – Careers & employability – Organisations within society The Faculty of Economics and Business has four campuses. This position is related to our campuses in Leuven and Antwerp. Both are vibrant cities in the heart of Europe. KU Leuven is a research-oriented institution and is the most innovative university of Europe (ranked first in Reuters ranking).
You will execute a scientific research project and write a PhD on the topic of quality of labour. The purpose of this PhD is to contribute to the knowledge on work-related wellbeing, motivation and functioning in relation to new ways of working by exploring beneficial and detrimental combinations of (a) when and where work (and private) tasks are performed, (b) employee preferences and needs, and (c) colleague, private and supervisor support and contact. The project will specifically focus on new ways of working in the context of severe personal or societal crises, e.g. sudden full-time teleworking in today’s Corona crisis. The aim is to shed light on the impact of abrupt and unexpected implementations of new ways of working and their impact on organizational policies, practices and culture during and post crisis. This research will rely on quantitative methods (e.g., survey designs) and qualitative methods (e.g., interviews).
Your job will consist of the following activities:
  • Design and analysis of a survey and interview protocol;
  • Writing of scientific articles with the aim of including them in your PhD dissertation;
  • Active participation in (international) seminars and conferences;
  • Completion of the PhD program of the Faculty of Economics and Business;
  • Provision of educational support (e.g., supervision of master’s dissertations, supervising and grading exams).
Duration of the project will be 4 years, counting from the first day of employment.
  • You hold a master’s degree in a Humanities and Social Sciences domain (e.g., Management, Psychology, Applied Economics, Business Engineering, Sociology, or other);
  • You have received at least two ‘honours’ (i.e., cum laude, distinction) mentions over the course of your higher education;
  • You have demonstrable experience with, or a strong interest in designing and executing quantitative studies;
  • You are a good writer, and you are not afraid of public speaking (e.g., delivering a conference presentation, teaching a class);
  • Your written and spoken English and Dutch are excellent (the data collection will be in Dutch);
  • You are an intellectually curious, analytical ‘idea person’, with a knack for academic research and a proactive, self-directed approach to work.
We offer employment as a full-time doctoral researcher in a stimulating environment starting around September or October 1st 2020 (to discuss), for a period of 4 years (pending positive evaluation after 12 months). Your main office will be in Leuven or Antwerp (to discuss). Educational support is needed at the campus in Antwerp.
